Planning a mobile app for your business: a practical checklist
Most app projects that struggle do so before development starts. Use this checklist to scope an app that people will actually use.

A mobile app can be a powerful channel — but only if people install it, understand it and come back. Most problems in app projects can be traced to decisions made, or skipped, before a single screen is designed. This checklist helps you plan an app with a clear purpose and a realistic first release.
1. Define the job the app does
Write one sentence describing what a user achieves with the app, for example: "Customers reorder their usual groceries in under a minute." If you cannot write that sentence, the app is not yet ready to build.
2. Decide why it must be an app
Apps make sense for frequent use, push notifications, location, camera, offline access or a home-screen presence. If people will use it once or twice, a fast mobile website may serve them better and cost less.
3. Map every role, not just the customer
- Customers using the app
- Staff or delivery partners fulfilling requests
- Admins managing content, orders, users and reports
The admin panel and backend often represent as much work as the customer app. Planning them early avoids surprises in scope and budget.
4. Scope a focused first release
List every feature you want, then mark only those required for the core job. Launch with those, measure real usage and add the rest based on evidence rather than assumptions.
5. Plan integrations and operations
- Payments, SMS, email and maps services
- Existing systems such as billing, inventory or CRM
- Who answers support queries and handles failed orders
- How and when updates will be released
6. Budget for life after launch
Operating systems change every year, devices evolve and users ask for improvements. Plan for ongoing maintenance and iteration from the start, so the app stays reliable and keeps getting better.
